How to wear shorts (in summer)

In France summer is definitely here and Paris is burning (well at least it feels like it).
Therefore, more and more shorts can be spotted in the streets.
But it is not easy to wear those in a stylish way. And we wouldn’t want to look like tourists hiking in the city would we?
Here are my tips to master it.

1. What shorts will look best on me?
And first of all, should I wear those?
You might wonder if any short will actually look good on you.
I have to admit, that speaking from a style point of view, shorts do not flatter everyone.
Short shorts set the focus on the legs and therefore look better on those who are lucky to own beautifully shaped legs (either thin or curvy).
Long shorts look better on thin girls with slender calves.

But hey! That’s a good thing that we do not all look good in the same outfits, fashion world would be boring otherwise.

If shorts in summer are not your thing enjoy light pants, dresses and skirts, etc

2. How to style the short short?

A. For the office

Depends from your office. (Some won’t tolerate short shorts either way).

They shall not be too short or too tight.

Wear them with a classic top or blouse to downgrade their sexy side.

It’s safer to forget heels, but if you want to add some, rather opt for chunky sandals or boots (Louboutin like pumps can quickly look tacky).

You can play it suit like. It is very modern yet professional.

B. For the street

There are plenty of different styles of shorts.

Loose, tight, low waisted, high waisted, printed, plain, etc.

What do they have in common? To show a whole lot of leg.

Therefore they look better worn with something rather loose on top  in order not to look oversexy.

The super tight shorts being the most sexy ones, I advise you to wear them with flats. (And you should really own flawless legs and bum for those).

Regarding looser short shorts, you can wear them with flats as well as with chunky heels.

Here are different styles you could try (note that all the ladies in the pics above wear rather loose and not over revealing tops)

– Preppy in print with darts

printed short shorts

Preppy style makes super tiny look cute rather than too sexy.

– Urban chic in black loose

This all-black loose look could easily be worn with chunky sandals during the day and even thin-heeled pumps for sexier night out.

– Cool in  prints

Heels would also be an option.

– Casual in rolled up jeans

Long sleeves and elegant hat makes this black mini short look chic.

C. For a night out

Think loose and fluid, they are the chicest. Silky or… sparkly!

Like during the day opt for looser tops. For the shoes you can go more sexy by adding thin high heeled sandals or pumps (better to stay away from platform and open-toes though)

sparkly shorts

Whatever!

3. How to style the long short (or bermuda shorts)

First, note that those are really not flattering for curvy calves and tights.

The advantage of those longers shorts are:

– they are office proof

– they can easily be worn over 40

A. For the office

Opt for the suit like ones (like Jen Aniston).

Just as for the short shorts a fluid blouse will match perfectly.

You can also go for a more fitted blouse. But not for a skin tight top.

If your office is ok with more casualness a fluid top like a T-shirt will look good.

The bermuda shorts can be close-fitting but not too tight. Except if you run for the Tour de France.

And personally I would not recommend the ones that look like divided skirts. Except if you are looking for a true man repeller style.

If you do not own very long and thin calves (like 90% of us), use some heels!

B. For the street

The risk with bermuda shorts is to look like a tourist. I love tourists, don’t get me wrong ^^ Just that the “tourist style” is not acknowledged for its elegance.

To manage that:

– Avoid to wear polo-shorts and sweatshirts with it

– Choose fine fabrics: jean, linen, leather, coton, but no synthetics or jogging.

– Do not choose those with pockets or laces.

– Casual chic with oversize jean bermuda shorts

This oversize silhouette rocks it thanks to the heels.

– Boho style with suede bermuda shorts

casual bermuda

A more fitted silhouette, made flattering by the belting and the heels (straw wedges are super comfy)

You can also go for the office style in the street! With colors that’ll look very urban.

C. For a night out

“Yuk, bermuda shorts are NOT sexy, I’ll never wear them for a party”.

Let’s discuss this assertion shall we?

longer shorts

Those fluid metalized bermuda shorts worn with a neutral silk blouse and an high waisted belt are just as chic as a skirt aren’t they?

So ladies, are you ready for the shorts?

I think there is quite a difference between Paris, Rome and London. Distinct difference.

    • Aloïs Guinut says:

I go to London once a year at least so I can tell about the style of Londoners but I have less been to Italy. How would you describe the style of italian women?

  3. Kathryn says:

I adore this website! I have been looking for something like this for some time. Your insights into fashion are perfect!

I am curious, what do you think are some differences between Parisian fashion and fashion in Rome? I just went to Rome and hope to go to Paris next summer 🙂 In Rome everyone was very polished and classic, wore a lot of black, leather jackets, layers, etc.

    • Aloïs Guinut says:

I think it is a bit the same chic european style, I have not been to Rome frequently enough to give an accurate opinion but if there are any italian readers out there I would like to hear what they think.
I am happy you like the blog 🙂
